Akeem Loyd

Akeem Lloyd is a Youth Advocate, Educator, Believer in the Power of Young People, Mentor and Poet. He dedicates his life’s work to doing the best that he can to create opportunities for the youth, to help strengthen their confidence as well as to increase self-love.

Drawing from his own personal experiences as they relate to scholastic struggles, the absence of his mother and his father, depression, lack of emotional-social support, and various other obstacles, Akeem shares his life as an “open book” from which radiates dynamic and inspiring messages that relate to many people across the strata.

He uses his story as a tool to let others know that they are not alone, to inspire them to know that they too can overcome their challenges, that they too can walk in their conviction, conquering what he refers to as “internal success/internal peace” ultimately evolving into the best version of themselves.

Akeem realized during his summer entry class of college (The Educational Opportunity Fund; EOF Program) that he was not where he could have been academically, almost failing out of the summer program as well as finishing his first semester with a 1.5 gpa. Akeem, driven to “Break The Cycle” discovered the steps to creating a successful college experience. After a 1.5 gpa start, Akeem went on to complete his B.A in African American Studies with a minor in History in 3 and half years; finishing with a 3.4 gpa from Rutgers University-Camden Campus.

He was the first person in his family to attend college and graduate. He was also the first person in his family to earn his Master’s degree, where he graduated from Temple’s School Of Education, focusing on Urban education and Youth Development.

The culmination of his challenges and his successes has inspired his efforts to share with as many students and young people as possible the steps to creating the best possible experience for academic and personal success. He has created workshops such as; Breaking The Cycle, Discovering Who You Are, Again, and more, to help guide students to a better understanding of how they can set themselves up for success.

As Founder of the Youth Development Program, Lifting Individual Futures Together (L.I.F.T.), Akeem strives to continue his work with the youth by providing a safe space for high quality academic sessions, thought provoking discussions, freedom of expression, mentorship and the building of community between diverse peers.

Akeem’s goal is to help people, students, see themselves in the light that they are meant to walk in, and to believe that it belongs to them, to help them believe that they can conquer all challenges while challenging them to commit to the process it takes to reach the best version of themselves. Understanding the need for social and emotional support, he pours all of his efforts into electrifying poetry and stories, encouraging all that he encounters to dig a little deeper, connect with their emotions, own their voice, embrace their story, and to shine their light that is meant to be shared…”because your playing small does not serve the world, there’s nothing enlightened about shrinking…as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same” -M. Williamsom

The version of Akeem that everyone has come to know, could not have happen without his faith, family, mentors and friends who have spent numerous amounts of energy investing their belief in him.
